Ohrid Tourism

Nicknamed as the ‘City of Light’, Ohrid is a hidden gem of southwestern Macedonia. It boasts of being listed under the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The opulent history and heritage of the city date back to 2400 years before the new era. It was one of the oldest and most significant Roman routes in Balkan.

Ohrid is crammed by many beautiful churches and a majestic castle on the top. The traditional and lakeside restaurants on the cobblestone streets of the city are a treat for every foodie. The city is located on the banks of the serene Lake Ohrid, which is the reason behind many scenic spots in the city.

From age-old historical monuments to hip party places, from serene places to relax to traditional markets, this gem of a city has got something for everyone. Legend says that there were 365 chapels in the city, one for every day of the year. Now the number has obviously decreased, but the city still has a lot in store for the religiously inclined. The restored monastery located at  Plaošnik dates back to the 10th century and is one of the oldest universities in the western world.

Ohrid is one of the only 28 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world that fall under the category of both cultural and natural heritage sites. Despite this, the city has managed to not become a tourist circus. A visit to Ohrid is incomplete without tasting the delectable culinary delights the city has to offer. A Burek from a local bakery, fish and salad dishes at the Restaurant Dva Bisera and a shot of rakija(fruit brandy) are enough to make you want to stay in the city forever.
