Located in the old town of Ohrid, the Ancient Theatre dates back to 200 BC and is designed similar to the Hellenistic, open-air theatres in Scupi and Stobi- indicating that its time of construction was during the reign the Roman Empire. The theatre was actually used for Gladiator fights during the Roman times but was later used by the Romans to execute Christians. It is believed that since the locals hated its use for execution, they buried it and for ages it remained so.
It was not until the 1980’s when excavations of nearby homes were carried on and archaeologists found stones with carvings of Dionysius- the Greek god known to be related to the performance arts. This gave the archaeologists a clue that there might be a theatre nearby. Soon, they excavated the entire theatre with its steps intact that were facing the main stage. Today the place lies in ruins and is quiet a shocking find during a casual walk through the old part of Ohrid. However, during the Ohrid Summer festival, the theatre is used for performing classics. If you can, try to visit the theatre during an event. On any other day, the place still makes for an interesting short walk
