The Nakamura Family Residence is a family home that was constructed before World War II. It’s timeless yet authentic Japanese architecture is what has made it an important cultural space in Okinawa. The home belonged to a rich farmer in the 18th century and even today maintains the feel of the years gone by.

The building is surrounded by a stone wall and has the main courtyard. Walk in and you see the house is completely made from wood with straw mats that make up most of the flooring. The screens that form doorways is kept open for you to walk in and admire the collection of paintings and pottery. The stables, even though now empty, is part of the property and along with the storing room, completes the house.

Take your time as you see beautifully finished pottery that has hand painted designs to later step out and see the refreshing outdoor area that has a burst of greenery.
