Okinawa’s rich culture feeds its art pulse and to recognise this asset, the Japanese government decided to build a formal performance space in 1996. The National Theatre Okinawa was thus born and currently showcases Okinawan dances, folk music, dramas and performances and the popular Sanshin music. The classic Ryukuan performances are the highlight of the place and include Kumiodori and Ryukyuan dance.

The design of the theatre goes in-sync with the idea of the theatre. Resembling a lotus flower with its petals arched outwards, the exteriors of the building or “chinibu” has innumerable spacing or holes that are a solution to the harsh weather of the island. The phenomenal acoustics of the place with the distinctly regal interiors and design, magnify the performance.
