Located close to the Zakimi Caste, the Yomitan Museum of History and Folklore showcases the food, clothing, homes, and culture of Yomitan. Yomitan was the village where the US troops set their foot first in Japan during World War II and since then, they left a part of American culture in Okinawa. Currently, the place has over 400,000 items and includes the famous textiles of Yomitan along with archaeological findings from the nearby Zakimi Castle site. There is a small art museum on the third floor where you can find a permanent collection of the fabrics and ceramics that were made and used in the region.

The highlight of the museum is the kamekoubaka tomb that is a type of grave found only in Okinawa. You can literally take a peek inside the tomb that is shaped like a turtle’s back! The museum also has an exhibit dedicated to the Second World War which explains the progression and effects of the war in Okinawa.
