The Fredenbaumpark is one of the largest parks in Dortmund covering an area of 63 hectares. The park is called the “green lung” of the city owing to its sprawling green cover. Plans were drawn to derive the park from the forest area in the early 19th century. A railway connection was initiated to connect to the area and in the early 20th century, these plans were put to purpose. In 1911, the northern part of the park was converted to an airfield which was the first airfield of the city.

Today, the park has walkways, a rose garden, table tennis, a BBQ area, pavilions where you can have a picnic, mini-golf, an inline skating area, a volleyball area, playgrounds for matches, a play area for children and a lake where you can go boating.

Highlight of the park include:

• Big tepee camp at the park
• The park pond which is the most serene spot in Fredenbaumpark
• The annual Christmas market that is recreated in medieval style

The flowers that are seen around the park complete its beauty and you can easily spot rhododendrons bloom here in spring season. Do keep an eye out for any upcoming festivals. The park is popular for hosting the Medieval Fantasy Spectaculum festival every spring- a “must see” on your list if you would love to explore the local culture of the city.
