Situated around 40 kilometres from Ooty is the famous and surreal Mukurthi National Park. At a high altitude and spread across 78.46 kilometres, the national park was created to protect the Nilgiri Tahr. Infact, the park was previously known as the Nilgiri Tahr National Park. The park also boasts of a rich flora and fauna. The natural vegetation consists of vast stretches of grasslands interspersed with numerous isolated and compact sharply defined small woodlands. Only two storeys of tree layers are seen. Lianas are quite common, Epiphytes are abundant and consists mostly of lichens, ferns, bryophytes and various orchids. Apart from the Tahr, the park is also home to endangered species like the Asian Elephant and the Bengal Tiger. Various trek routes can be found throughout the Mukurthi National Park. For enthusiastic trekkers and hikers, the Mukurthi Peak is a must visit.
