Ashmolean is the world’s first and finest university museum. What started as an accommodation for Elias Ashmole’s ‘cabinet of curiosities’, his assorted collection of rare and quirky objects from all over the world (such as a moth eaten stuffed dodo), now is a grand repository of fine art and archaeological artefacts. The building was built in 1841 and reflects a delightful inspiration from Greek architecture.

The Ashmolean’s galleries contain an eclectic and rare display of materials. The collection you find here has stories to tell from across time and across continents.

Some of the major attractions at Ashmolean are: paintings by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael. The museum also houses Lawrence of Arabia’s ceremonial Arab dress, Oliver Cromwell’s death mask, a range of Pre-Raphaelite paintings, pottery in Italian Majolica, Greek and Minoan tradition, as well as ornate English silver.

Some of the ongoing exhibitions at the museum revolve around the theme of commemorating the First World War, Christopher Gandy’s collection of art and architecture from the Middle East, and paintings by German and Chinese artists.

Ashmolean also hosts musical concerts from time to time which are inspired by their splendid collection.
