Ashmolean is the world’s first and finest university museum. What started as an accommodation for Elias Ashmole’s ‘cabinet of curiosities’, his assorted collection of rare and quirky objects from all over the world (such as a moth eaten stuffed dodo), now is a grand repository of fine art and archaeological artefacts. The building was built in 1841 and reflects a delightful inspiration from Greek architecture.

The Ashmolean’s galleries contain an eclectic and rare display of materials. The collection you find here has stories to tell from across time and across continents.

Some of the major attractions at Ashmolean are: paintings by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael. The museum also houses Lawrence of Arabia’s ceremonial Arab dress, Oliver Cromwell’s death mask, a range of Pre-Raphaelite paintings, pottery in Italian Majolica, Greek and Minoan tradition, as well as ornate English silver.

While exploring the beautiful galleries, you get to be part of many special activities. You can handle and examine coins from different civilizations at the ‘Hands-On Coins’. Think you have stumbled upon something that looks rare and exceptional? Bring it in to the ‘Coin and Archeological Identification Scheme’.

Inspired by the collection to create your own works of art? You are welcome to sketch at the Cast gallery.

Some of the ongoing exhibitions at the museum revolve around the theme of commemorating the First World War, Christopher Gandy’s collection of art and architecture from the Middle East, and paintings by German and Chinese artists.

Ashmolean also hosts musical concerts from time to time which are inspired by their splendid collection.

Also, there is always something or the other planned for the junior visitors. As they explore the museum they can take part in the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, make secret codes, sketch and even practice making mummies and sarcophaguses.

The Ashmolean Museum conducts one to two day long courses and workshops where you can try your hands at sculpting, pottery, embroidery, painting and so much more. The museum shop has an exceptionally good collection of prints, stationery, books, jewellery, and souvenirs. It is also a teaching and research department of the University of Oxford.

One of the rare University museums in the world, the place with its astounding collection of quirky archaeological artefacts surely leaves a mark on anyone who visit it for the first time.
