Welcome to the oldest botanic garden of Great Britain. The Garden was founded in early 17th century for the specific purpose of growing medicinal plans.

At present the Botanic Garden has over 8,000 species of flora and is spread over 4.5 acres of land. Beauty presents itself to the visitor at the entrance itself. Danby Gateway, a Baroque arch decorated with ornate carving, is truly a site to behold. The Garden’s oldest tree is housed in the Walled Garden that still retains the 17th century brickwork. Plants in the Garden that are not suited to the English weather are grown in the Glasshouses.

In the 1860s, Lewis Carroll frequented the Botanic Gardens along with little Alice Liddell and her sisters. Needless to say, the Garden was a source of inspiration for Carroll’s famed novel.

The area outside the Walled Garden is also open to visitors where they can enjoy the view from River Cherwell.

Bring along a picnic basket! Botanic Garden is a beautiful spot for a day with family and friends. While the grown-ups take pleasant walks around the place, the kids can enjoy storytelling, crafts, musical performances and picnic events that take place at the Garden all year round.
