About Jata Shankar Temple, Pachmarhi

The Jata Shankar Temple is a popular Shiva temple cave where naturally formed stalagmites form the deity of Lord Shiva as ‘Shivalingams’.

The rock formation that resembles the Jata (hair) of Lord Shiva is what gives the cave it’s name. A visit here as you walk around the loosely set boulders and explore the warm and cool pools that are formed by natural streams, completes the experience. The main shrine is the highlight of the place.

  • This place was so close to our hotel so we thought, oh it might be another boring temple. But far from it. It's not your traditional temple. This place is legit. It gives you the feels of past. Of mahadev's presence, his struggle, agony, sacrifice. You can feel it in the atmosphere of the caves. There are real jata shaped rocks at the very base. This is where according to the lore he sacrificed his dread-locks (hair) (jata). A must visit.

  • Visited this place in 2015, good Jata Shankar Mandir. Pachmarhi, though a small town but has many tourist attractions. Pandav Cave, Bee fall, Sun-set point etc are really wonderful, must visit. It is about 300 km from Bhopal. Bhopal can be reached by trains from Delhi. However, it is better to take train to railway station nearby Pachmarhi. In Pachmarhi, do not forget to taste tea/chai, there is a shop in the market which used to be crowded selling tea from morning to late night. do not expect very good hotels.
