About Pacifica State Beach, Pacifica

Pacifica State Beach is the southernmost of Pacifica, California's large beaches, it is a 0.75 mile long crescent shaped beach located at the mouth of the San Pedro Valley in downtown Pacifica off State Route 1, in San Mateo County. Pacifica State Beach is one of the most popular beginner surfing spots in the San Francisco area. Among surfers it is commonly known as Linda Mar Beach because it fronts Pacifica's Linda Mar subdivision. It is a State Beach managed by the City of Pacifica through an operating agreement with California State Parks. The Taco Bell restaurant on the beach side of the highway is reputed to be the world's most scenic Taco Bell location. Pacifica State Beach provides habitat for the western snowy plover, a shorebird which is designated as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Between 1989 and 2005, Pacifica State Beach was the focus of an extensive beach habitat restoration program, in association with the San Pedro Creek flood control and habitat restoration. In 2002, as part of a partnership with the Pacifica Land Trust and the California Coastal Conservancy, this involved a $2.2 million purchase and removal of two ocean side homes and surrounding acreage for the purpose of beach and estuary restoration. This project was identified as a Top Restored Beach by theAmerican Shore and Beach Preservation Association in 2005, cited as " example of a well-planned, well-executed coastal project that is the product of cooperative efforts of the local community, state and federal agencies, scientists, engineers and citizens. The complex beach and habitat restoration project involved over 10 regulatory and permitting agencies, funding from eight granting agencies and the active participation of eight environmental groups. It is one of the first beaches to utilize managed retreat as a method of shoreline protection. In addition to beach nourishment, it has restored habitat for four threatened and endangered species and enhanced community access with expanded parking lots, trails and new restrooms. Over 1 million people visit this beach annually".

  • An easy 20-30 minute drive South from San Francisco on Highway 1 and you can find yourself at Pacifica State Beach. The parking is fairly easy as you can park right in town or up the hill behind the Pacifica Beach Hotel on Roberts Road and then walk down across the highway. While you’re on the beach there’s a really nice view of the residential area on the hill (which was almost covered in fog when I was there and, was told, is common). Although not very big, the beach itself seemed really clean and well kept. Down on the South side of the beach there’s a Taco Bell, which I thought was pretty funny. If you’re into watching surfers, there were plenty of them here. Overall it was an enjoyable beach. It could be fun to rent a hotel room at the Pacifica Beach Hotel and hang out for a weekend.

  • Very nice beach, much bigger than it looks from the road. Beautiful surf, with spectacular splashes over large boulders. On the north end is a rocky shore around the point that is fun to hike. There are restroom and shower facilities. There is the beachside Taco Bell.

  • Great beach with awesome views and some great trails. Unfortunately the water is pretty cold. You can watch surfers all along the coast line in Pacifica.

  • Waves haven't been violent any of the times I've been here. It's a rather calm beach from what I've observed. It's clean, not too loud, and beautiful. This is my favorite beach. You'll find a lot of surfers here, the parking is reasonable and there's a good amount of parking slots available. They got showers, bathrooms, and a Taco Bell on the beach.

  • Nice beach, ample paid parking, public restrooms and outdoor showers. Very popular with the surfing crowd, more people in wetsuits in the water than there were people on the beach. Although the parking is pay as you go, it was reasonable. When I visited a 4 hour parking pass was 5 dollars. If you go during the week, it's not very crowded at all.
