The Glen Canyon Dam was built close to page in the 1960s… and it created the 161,390 acres Lake Powell, the second man-made reservoir in the USA. The waters fill the red sandstone of Glen Canyon, creating an otherworldly contrast of colors. Most of the fun around the lake happens on water–house boating, water skiing, kayaking, fishing, hiking, and camping on one of the many sandy beaches. On a boat, you drive right into the waters between towering canyon walls, or head over to some sightseeing areas such as the Cathedral in the Desert, the Bathtub Ring, La Gorce Arch and Navajo Canyon. A decent variety of animals-big horn sheep, jackrabbits, lizards and frogs-live at the edges of the lake, as do a many species of birds. And you should of course check out the dam too.
The place to rent the gear and boat necessary to tour to the lake is from one of the three marinas; Wahweap and Antelope Point to the south and close to the town of Page, and the Bullfrog Marina on the north. It's also where you stock up on food. Many people simply opt for guided cruise tours of the lake from these points.
Annually, the lake sees almost three million visitors.
