  • Il museo archeologico prenestino è uno degli esempi della sovrapposizione storica, e architettonica, di cui l'Italia abbonda. Tutto poggia sull'antica Preneste la cui fondazione si perde nel mito, fino ad arrivare alla fiera resistenza contro i Romani con i suoi alleati della Lega Latina. Grazie alla sua posizione strategica, dominante la Valle del Sacco, questa città potè fiorire nei commerci; tanta ricchezza confluì, poi, nella costruzione del santuario della Fortuna Primigenia, vero capolavoro di epoca repubblicana. Le ipotesi di ricostruzione mostrano la grandiosità di questa opera che nel corso dei secoli ha attirato l'attenzione di artisti e architetti, ispirando altre costruzioni in tutto il mondo. Sui resti del Santuario nell'XI secolo fu edificato un primo palazzo che deve il suo nome ai primi proprietari, i Colonna, a cui subentrarono i Barberini nrl 1630. A questa potente famiglia è da ascrivere l'attuale sistemazione del complesso, nel quale trova la sua collocazione, fin dal 1956, il museo vero e proprio. Sempre i Barberini sistemarono in queste sale il meraviglioso mosaico del Nilo, capolavoro assoluto dell'arte ellenistica. Soltanto per quest'opera andrebbe la pena di fare un salto a Palestrina, cittadina che si vanta di aver dato i natali, fra l'altro a Lucio Cornelio Silla, politico romano, papa Bonifacio VIII, e Giovanni Luigi detto da Palestrina sommo musicista.
