Located around 40 miles to southeast of Palm Springs; the Mecca hills are a result of the convergence of North American Plate and Pacific Plate. The San Andreas Fault has resulted into unique geological formations and Painted Canyon is one such phenomena. Set in the heart of the hills, the Painted Canyons exhibit vivid shades of rose, pink, red, purple and green. The Canyon runs in a general north-south direction and is distinguished by Ironwood, smoke trees and Palo Verde.
The area also presents a rare Mecca Aster- Lilac tinted bloom flowers which resemble to daisy. Ocotillo, cactus, lizards, snakes, and prairie falcons are also a delight to observe.
Occasionally, bighorn sheep crossing over the Orocopio Mountain in search of water can be spotted.
