Azad Maidan - Review

The garden isn't exactly attractive, but it is distinctive for the small Corinthian style pavilion in the centre. The pavilion is a monument to Dr Tristao de Braganza Cunha, revered in Goa as a freedom fighter. Once upon a time the statue of Portuguese general Afonso de Albuquerque stood at this spot. The location is surrounded on all sides by government and other buildings-Police Headquarters, the Menezes Braganza Institute, the Government Printing Press, and the Municipal Garden.

  • Superb memorial for the freedom fighters of Goa liberation. A must visit for the first time visitors of Goa. It has also got a band stand where live music can be played. The location is superb and happens to be a historical landmark in the history of liberation of Goa state which was once upon a union territory along with Daman and Dew. But later became an independent state and is one of a advanced state after it became a hub of Bhartiya Janata Party under the able leadership of Drew Manohar Parrikar who also became the Chief Minister of Goa and MLA of Panjim and also the honorable defence Minister of India.

  • Came for the anti PDA rally. This is a lovely public space. Green, clean and excellent acoustics.

  • At the heart of the city. Has names of important figures from history etched on the main square pillar. All major political events, rallies, major social events, even festivals like holy are held here. It can be called the epicenter of the city with no exaggeration.

  • Panaji is city where I grew up as a child. In the heart of the city is the martyr's memorial cum ground known as Azad Maidan which is a place for remembrance of the freedom fighters and carries a memorial monuments in their memory. This was originally built some 150 - 60 years back by Portuguese who then we're rulling Goa as a square for the building of administration (which is presently housing Head quarters of Goa Police) and was named as Parca de Sete Janelas which means sure of seven windows as the building has unique feature of seven giant size windows on its either side of giant enterace gate. Presently the whole area is renovated under Parrikar government. This place is now used for public gatherings, huge meetings, public protests and even for religious programs. Make it a point to visit this place if you happen to be in Panaji Goa.

  • It is the small plot in Panjim town, a pavilion in the center presently built and in the middle is the statue of Dr. Tristao de Braganza Cunha, the former Goan Freedom Fighter, He was the 'Valiant Hero of Goan Fight for Freedom'. Previously during Portuguese in 1847 the State of Afonso Albuquerque made of bronze and two meters tall was built, after conquering various sites in Goa which is now place in Museum at Old Goa. Close to this is one monument dedicated to those who fought to liberate the Goa from Portuguese Rule.  On the west side of the square is long broad building; behind this is a Police Headquarter; previously it was the former Portuguese army barracks and Military Headquarters which was built in 1832. Just further end of square is Menezes Braganza Institute having huge library, original known Vasco da Gama Institute built in 1871 to promote the Literature, Arts and Science, and in 1953 was renamed in respect of Luis de Menezes Braganza (1878 - 1938), a great crusader for social, religious and political.  Opposite to Institute, next to ferry terminal is a monument dedicate to the victims who died in 1901, when ferry drowned in Mandovi River going from Panjim to Verem, eighty one people died in this accident. This memorial was built Goan family living in Aden, since they have lost their relatives in this incident. On the opposite of this square towards the finishing part of it, is the Government Printing Press and at the back of this full building in a big quadrangle view is conquered by the other State Government Offices. Moving further on from here and taking the route on the opposite side of the square from Police Headquarters, walking little distance you reach to Municipal Garden.
