Basilica Of Bom Jesus - Review

The Basilica of Bom Jesus or Borea Jezuchi Bajilika is a very well-known Church in Goa. It is a beautiful Basilica and is known for its simplicity and elegance. The architecture is of baroque style and it this type of design is rarely seen in a country like India.

It is famous for the glass case which holds the remains of St. Francis Xavier and there are many interesting stories about the remains. The Basilica is more that 400 years old and is a very important religious site today. The exquisite gold altar is also a major crowd puller. Even though the church is partially in ruins, the rustic charm of the building has been preserved as it hasn’t been allowed to be plastered. This grand and yet simply built church draws countless visitors every year and is an important place for Christianity in India.

  • One of the oldest church in India, Churches in Goa are an important legacy of it being an erstwhile Portuguese colony. Built across centuries, these architectural wonders were more than just a place of worship; they hold a place of historical or cultural significance as well. One of the popular churches in Goa is the Basilica of Bom Jesus. The mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier is preserved here in this Basilica and hence revered by many. It also is an UNESCO World Heritage site.

  • The Basilica of Bom Jesus church is one of a kind in India and is known for its exemplary baroque architecture. Built in the year 1594 and consecrated in 1605, this church coincides with the beginning of Christianity in India. It holds the remains of St. Francis Xavier, a special friend of St. Ignatius Loyola with whom he founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Even after 400 years, the remains are in a good condition and are taken out once every decade. Up until half a century ago, Goa was the capital of Portuguese rule in India and this is part of their heritage. A site with rich cultural and religious significance, the Basilica of Bom Jesus has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO

  • The most attractive place of the portuguese era in Goa, situated in Old Goa, better known as Rome of the East. Interior and exterior both are very attractive. Ornately decorated and superbly restored. Paintings and other artifacts are very nice. A must visit place while you are in Goa. Awesome and Very definitely worth a visit. Having an audio guide was tremendously helpful in adding substance to all that was to be seen. Stunningly beautiful and very interesting from architectural, historic and religious perspectives. Tickets close early in the evening...there are a few portraits on sale here...relatively expensive. There is a good park nearby for a stroll...and a line of souvenir shops line the lane leading to the church. Easier and faster to walk to this place from old Goa. Spectacular is a small word It is stunning from the inside. Everywhere you look you will find something beautiful. There are paintings on the wall. Its just unbelievably beautiful! It was quite an spectacular experience. If you like to explore History of Goa than you should visit this Church and take a Guide who will tell you the story about Portuguese and their establishment in INDIA I was happy to see and hear about their establishment but when I got to know about them I am totally disappointed....... Architecturally it is very strong and Beautiful Design...... They have made this place well maintained......
