This sanctuary for nuns and widows was the first nunnery of the east. Completed in 1627, the church is unusual for its large fort-like structure, the massive courtyard and the huge buttresses. The four altars inside are dedicated to St. Monica, St. Augustine, the Bom Jesus and the Miraculous Cross. In 1636, the cross is said to have opened its eyes and blood was said to have flown from them. Today the nunnery has been converted into a Museum of Christian Art, containing works from the 16th to 19th centuries such as silver, ivory, manuscripts and statues.
