Igreja De Santa RitaCurrently Closed
The oldest church of Paraty, the Igreja de Santa Rita was built in 1722 for the freed slaves by the freed slaves. In spite of being liberated, the freed folks weren’t allowed in the church of the otherwise common man. Constructed from stone and mortar, the igreja is quite a standard Baroque styled church with three windows and a tower. Today, the church houses a small museum of religious art, the artifacts of which are constantly revamped and restored.
The church is often shut for renovations, so call ahead or check their website to see if it’s open to the public.
