Loosely translating to the ‘perpetual defender’, the Forte Defensor Perpetuo is the only standing fort of Paraty. Rebuilt in the 1800’s, the primary objective was to keep all the pirates at bay and prevent an invasion of the city. The museum erected here marks the first settlement of the city in 1793. Some of the original arms and ammunitions as well as parts of the fort are preserved and open to the public; the old stone wall, the canons and the cells that are the home of the Gunpowder- the last of its type in Brazil.
