Opera Bastille - Opera National De Paris - Review

The more contemporary cousin of Palais Garnier, Opera bastille was built to plug the loopholes of the architecturally grand but not suitably ‘popular or modern’ Palais Garnier. Opera Bastille now hosts most of the operas in it’s 3300-seater auditorium that boasts of excellent acoustics and comfortable seating. The architecture of the building has been a subject of many debates with many people arguing that its modern, functional design is not befitting the Opera. That being said, the Opera Bastille has given Paris a suitable venue to host its world-class operas that are as moving as they are entertaining.

  • We saw Boris Godunov under Maestro Damian Iorio. Wonderful performance all round. Staging is very grey though.

  • I Would love to have an informed opinion about the history and architecture of Opera Bastille, but the 5:00PM visit got cancelled at 5:20PM. Full refund, sure, but I definitely expected better.

  • This building 🏢 looks like as a sad 😔 blockhaus in ruin. To be honest, the sound 🔊 is well thinked. And the staff tries to be professional. By the way, beware! it is not a popular opera, even if, often, the greatests of the singers sing in play-back. In conclusion, this expensive opera is a desaster. I hope one day musical 🎶 comedies and french cancans will transform this blockhaus in the real spirit of the popular quarter of La Bastille; this legendary spirit of freedom that inspired the french revolution. For the moment, I say no to the opera bourgeois.

  • Fantastic venue for taking in the performing arts. Easy access from Metro. Great acoustics and sight lines to the stage. The "sub-title" display for the Opera performance we attended was a very much appreciated feature. All in all an enjoyable evening.

  • I took a tour of this amazing venue and was absolutely blown away. I saw all stages of production from building the sets, to accessories, to costumes, to rehearsal, and more. The tour guide was phenomenal! She was extremely knowledgeable, and spoke great English, especially considering all the technical terms she had to translate. This is a must visit for all.
