Discovered on July 14, 1859, Diamond Caverns have become a popular tourist destination since then. The cave is mainly made up of Limestone, which was formed ages ago during the late Mississippian Period during which, most of the city was under a shallow warm sea. There are also large deposits of Calcite, which is very similar to limestone. Furthermore, several other formations occupy the cave, including Stalactite, Columns, Drapery/Bacon Strip, Flowstone, Soda Straws, and Cave Pearl. The cavern has over 350 steps, and the ascent is quite strenuous. It is advisable to wear proper footwear for this. The guides here are warm and knowledgeable, and make the entire tour a fun-filled experience.
