A 17th century sanctuary, it is dedicated to Virgin Mary. Betharram being a very cultural and spiritual place, the sanctuary was a pilgrimage to pilgrims in and around the region. Located on the banks of river Gave, there’s a legend that Virgin Mary saved a young girl from drowning by holding a branch out under the bridge. Hence the name Betharram, meaning ‘beautiful branch’. The architecture is a unique masterpiece of Bearn and Baroque art. You can find many paintings, altarpieces, frames and lecterns from the 16th to the 18th century in here.
