The city of Peabody was named after George Peabody, a famous entrepreneur and good samaritan. George Peabody House is a historic museum dedicated to him. He was born here in the year 1795, and this has made the building a site of considerable historical importance. He continued living here till 1832. Till 1989 it served as a shelter for workers of the American Glue Company, after which it was converted into a museum. It aptly displays the important events in his life and his achievements. It is an elegant white and sand coloured building and its beauty lies in its simplicity. In addition to this, numerous artifacts related to the leather industry of the City of Peabody are displayed here, including leatherworking machinery and tools, photographs, and other artifacts that describe the three hundred year history of tanning in Peabody.
