Built originally as the “Fort San Carlos de Barrancas” in 1787, today the Fort Barrancas nests comfortably on a hilltop in Pensacola. The rich history of the fort is evident through some parts of it being restored. The fort survived the First battles under the control of U.S., and went on to stand its ground during the American Civil War. Today, the Fort Barrancas is restored and now an open visitor center. People can explore the fort, the battery and its history. Many exhibits tell tales of the war. People may go on the short trails, and appreciate the panoramic view of the Pensacola Bay.

Fort Barrancas Reviews & Ratings

  • Lots of steps but fantastic history and worth it! Beautiful views. (Sad and rude someone decided to put graffiti on the stone walls inside.) It is family friendly. My younger kids loved all the steps and long hallways, looking out the narrow windows, etc.

  • Great place to play hide and go seek with grand kids. There is only one way out over draw bridge. Great history lessons here

  • This was a great place to visit while in Pensacola. We walked all throughout the fort and it gave us some great photo opportunities too. We went in the morning and it wasn’t crowded and enjoyed seeing how it was built and the different stories throughout. I’d highly recommend it for a great stop on your trip.

  • Definitely something to experience! Learned a great amount of history about our country I never had a clue about while being awed by the craftsmanship and attention to detail put into a building made by a relatively small number of hands that weren't even free men. It's a humbling experience and absolutely worth the time to visit and walk through the structures.

  • Fort Barrancas has only a couple information placks that you can read, and yet I learned so much history from the two gentlemen who worked there at the fort. In the gift shop there is a small model showing the fort at which these two men shared a lot of history about the fort and Pensacola, FL. After asking all the questions you can think of, you then get to explore the fort. I hope you have as enjoyable of a visit to the fort as I did last month.
