About Whole Foods Market, Philadelphia

Whole Foods Market Inc. is an American supermarket chain exclusively featuring foods without artificial preservatives, colors, flavors, sweeteners, and hydrogenated fats. The precursors of Whole Foods were John Mackey and Renee Hardy Laswon's SaferWay store, founded in 1978, and Craig Weller and Mark Skiles' Clarksville Natural Grocery, both in Austin, Texas. On September 20, 1980, these stores merged to open the first Whole Foods Market Store, also in Austin, the company's current headquarters. In the 1990s, Whole Foods bought a series of organic food chain competitors, including Wellspring and Freshfield's, quickly cementing its position as the highest-volume seller of organic food in the United States. As of September 2015, it has 91,000 employees and 431 supermarkets in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, and has its main produce procurement office in Watsonville, California. As of 2015, founder John Mackey and Walter Robb were co-CEOs of the publicly traded company, with John Elstrott as chairman. In November 2016, the company announced that Walter Robb would be stepping down as co-CEO at the end of year and would remain with the company as a director. It became a Fortune 500 company in March 2005 and is the 30th largest retailer in the U.S., based on 2014 revenue. On June 16, 2017, it was announced that Amazon.com would acquire Whole Foods for $13.7 billion at $42 per share, a 27 percent premium to its previous closing price. Following the conclusion of the deal at the end of 2017, Whole Foods will become a subsidiary of Amazon, widely expanding Amazon's presence as a physical retailer.

  • this is one of the whole foods with a coffee bar, which is cool. I appreciated the staff. I asked question about locating some travel-size items. They walked me to the product and made me aware of various sales going on in the market. They pointed me to the products with the better savings. Hand counter to other staff members and it was a good experience there as well. My first time here and I will be sure to come back on my next visit

  • This place is amazing as far as a health food store goes. I could not find a jar of peanut butter for less then $8 though. I went in and got 3 or for things and spent $80. They have put a great extension on the grocery store... A beer section with seating. That was a good idea. The best part is there already made meals. The meals they have hot and ready and the ones made fresh for you to heat up. Love, love, love their chicken wings!!! I sure hope they were real chicken lol. Lines can be out of this world long so be mindful of the time and date you go. Make sure you look for someone giving away free samples to. There are always free samples!

  • Even under construction and renovation, the staff here is thoughtful and kind to help you find something or accept a return. If you make eye contact and are friendly (instead of talking on your phone or listening to music) you will have really pleasant exchanges with the people who work at this location. Very local neighborhood feel. Great sales that rotate so you can try everything at a lower price. Never have to worry about ingredients you don't want to eat/feed your family.

  • Enjoy the various promotions especially the Meatless Monday 4:00 - 7:00pm. This is when you can pile on as much food as the take out plate will hold ... from the salad bar for $8.00. Big fun.

  • After the other Whole Foods location was completely redone in the art museum area, you began to see that this store on South Street was lacking in its amenities. However, their recent and quick renovation has made it a great place for locals and passerbys to top off their needs and cravings. While already offering to its customers free parking, quality produce and a bright and spacious interior in a compact section of town, this location has added a bottle shop, more efficient check out lines and a nicer cafe to enjoy. Their cheese, deli and bakery sections have all been reorganized as well making the monotony of grocery shopping experience almost unnoticeable. As a recent home owner in the area and avid hater of grocery shopping, the renovation to this Whole Foods store truly adds to the enjoyment of coming here.
