The palace is the official residence of King Norodom Sihanouk and is one of the few public buildings in Phnom Penh worth seeing. It was built in the 19thCentury with French technology and Cambodian design. Many buildings are closed to the public, but the Silver Pagoda is spectacular to view, with its 5000 silver tiles that carpet the floor. It is also known as the Pagoda of the Emerald Buddha because of the large Buddha made of baccarat crystal. In front of the dais stands a large Buddha made of solid gold and decorated with 9584 diamonds.
