An ornate gate designed in traditional Bhutanese-style motifs, the Bhutan Gate is the main gateway to the country from India. It defines the demarcation of Indian and the Bhutanese territory, with the adjoining cities of Phuentsholing and Jaigon.
A much-photographed destination, the gate divides two strikingly different cities – the difference is actually palpable when you walk in, especially in terms of municipal cleanliness and the orderly planning of the buildings on the Phuentsholing side. There is also the shift in architectural style, as the Bhutanese designs are very distinctive. This is a good place for a quick visit and makes for a lovely first photograph for your Bhutan photo album!
- Crossing over from one city to another isn’t an issue for Bhutanese nationals, but Indian and foreign nationals should carry their passport and a photo ID as Bhutanese Army officials carry out routine checks here.
- Entry is free.
