The Petrified Forest of The Black Hills was opened for public in 1929 with its extensive display of out-cropping of fossilized and petrified woods. Before entering the woods, at the Petrified Forest Of The Black Hills Resort, you will be shown a fifteen minute video depicting how th4e Petrified forest came into being, the beginning of Earth till the present day. Take a look at the museum that contains rocks, petrified wood pieces and fossils, some of which are more that 120-130 millions of years old. As you enter the forest, you will see the woods and fossils in their actual place as you have seen on the video or at the museum. Stacks of petrified woods, rocky outcrops and even jungle turkeys can be seen on a hike through the forest, where you will suddenly fee too young compared to the woods!

  • My family spent a week in the Black Hills, and the Petrified Forest was one of our very favorite activities! The attraction is old and kitschy, and you get to see fossils and petrified trees from MILLIONS of years ago! They have things for sale in the gift shop that probably belong in a museum somewhere, but we did end up purchasing some souvenirs. We spent about 1.5 hours there, but we could have easily spent 3 hours. We loved it.

  • This is an awesome attraction. The informational video and museum are very educational. This short hike through the forest to see petrified trees is a must on any black hills trip.

  • Very nice educational and nature spot. Informational video is very good. Nice way to spend a few hours!

  • We spent 2+ very enjoyable hours here watching an informative video, browsing the museum and walking the short tour thru the garden. I think this would be a fabulous field trip for jr. high students (may be showing my age, this might be called this middle school now).

  • We all really enjoyed it. must watch movie first. Recomend it for every age. But must be able to handle uneven ground
