Eat delicious pastries, refuel with a tasty beverage or two and feast your eyes on the refreshingly modern MuraleTuttomondo di Keith Haring that stands right across, blazing in its full glory. This multi coloured masterpiece absolutely writhes with energy and positive vibrations.

The mural is the last piece of art created by American artist and social activist Keith Haring. The artist was famous for his unique style and the political statements he expressed through his work.  Haring started his career as an artist during his youth with a series called ‘Subway Drawings’ which became famous throughout the world. The temporary artwork, drawn in chalk on empty advertising spaces in the New York subway, captured the interest and imagination of traveling commuters. From this point onwards, there was no stopping this paintbrush punk, as he dedicated the rest of his short life to creating art that spoke to people rather than hid behind museum walls. He once said "My drawings don't try to imitate life, they try to create life...that's a much more so-called primitive idea...I don't use colours and lines to try to look life-like" This sentiment is expressed beautifully through Tuttomondo.

Tuttomondo is the last work of art Haring created before his untimely demise. The overall theme of the mural was peace and harmony, one that is portrayed through the actions of each of the figures. His usage of vibrant colours, squiggly lines and graphic symbolism resulted in a quivering riot of bodies upon the wall of the Church of St. Anthony. What makes this mural even more special is that it is one of a kind. It’s one of the few permanent creations created by Haring for outdoor displays. It took the artist a week to create, which was much longer than the couple of days his other murals took him. It was painted by Haring, an army of local students and craftsmen in long lasting acrylic. Peaceful colours were used in order to generate a positive feeling, which is exactly what you will feel when you look at this beautiful tribute to finding peace within the craziness of city life.

Haring passed away just a few months after he created Tuttomondo. His legacy lives on, through the mural as well as his namesake cafe located just opposite. The cafe is decorated with pictures of Haring as he worked on the mural and even has a small section where they sell Haring merchandise. A popular local haunt, you’re bound to see more Pisans than tourists in this pretty little cafeteria. Sip your coffee and gaze at the mural. As you bite into your bagel and rest your feet Tuttomondo will call out to you. With its compelling stories, conveyed through the language of art, this thought provoking mural will leave you in awe of the artist, the thinking and the rebel, Keith Haring.
