One of the buildings that comprise the famous Square of Miracles, the Battistero is as visually stunning as its neighbours the Cathedral and bell tower. Visitors are enchanted by its beautiful build and cool interiors. If you stand atop the balcony and whisper, the sound will travel all the way to the other side. The acoustics are so splendid that every hour or so, a song in Italian is sung at the altar and the music resonates throughout the structure, making one feel as though they are in heaven.
The Battistero, or baptistery, is the largest of its kind in Italy. The marble structure stands at 54.86 meters high and is a shining example of the artistic transition from Romanesque style to Gothic style. Designed by the great Diotisalvi, this was actually built over an older baptistery, and took 211 years to build. Curved Romanesque arches stretch across the ground, while sharp and pointed Gothic shapes stretch upwards and grasp the cupcake shaped dome of the building. This building also stands at a tilt, 0.6 degrees towards the Duomo. This building symbolizes ‘birth’ as it is where Christians are ‘born’ as they are baptized. Within the white walls, stands a beautifully detailed and surprisingly realistic statue of John the Baptist. For lovers of science- this is where Galileo Galilei was baptized!
Upon entering the Piazza, you will be drawn towards the Leaning Tower and the Cathedral, but do not miss out on this structure. It’s just as visually charming, with its own special story to tell. When you enter, you’ll be struck by the enormousness of the round shaped building. It’s starkly simple on the inside, which is a contrast to its ornamental exterior. As you stand under the nave, light will pour in from the numerous windows all around. Each loud note will ricochet off the walls and create an echo that will linger for as long as 10 seconds! The existence of a double roof, one pyramid shaped and the other, domed, has created an acoustically perfect interior!
Soon, your eyes will land upon the font, where total immersion baptisms take place and the beautifully crafted pulpit, located right in the middle. A journey to the top will provide fantastic, birds eye views of Pisa. The Battistero is a gem amongst other jewels and one that shouldn’t be overlooked. The ticket includes a trip to the other structures as well and is well worth the money. Afterwards, you can frolic in the spacious grassy parks that surround the Baptistery and grab a bite to eat. Photo opportunities are plenty, with the Leaning Tower of Pisa being a favourite among the crowd.

Very good experience. No restoration works, everything inside and outside in great shape. You should definitely go upstairs (it's free) to have a fantastic view to the ground floor. There is a very relaxed atmosphere up there, but not very religious (people sitting, reading books, enjoying their time). Tip: you can take great photos of the tower and cathedral from the upper floor windows. Outside - the battistero serves as a shadow-maker with many people lying on the grass in its shadow:)
A nice baptist church in Pisa and historical as well. This is worth visiting if we are in pisa. Entry fee for a church is something which they can think of...
1 of the 3 buildings that can be seen with a package purchase. These buildings can be nice to see while waiting for your scheduled time for the Leaning Tower. This building is very beautiful.
Go here on the hour or half hour for a very special experience.
Amazing architecture - fine detail on the exterior of this building. Good for a couple of photos but not much else.
