The Cathedral of Learning, better known as Cathy, is a Pittsburgh historic landmark. Situated in the centre of the University of Pittsburgh’s main campus, it stands at an impressive 535 feet. The 42 storey building is the second tallest university building in the entire world! Its exquisite late gothic revival style of architecture also adds to its status as one of the most remarkable buildings in all of Pittsburgh.

The Cathedral itself is a structure made of steel, with Indiana limestone laid over it. It acts as the main classroom and administrative centre of the university. In addition to its glorious four-story Commons Room, which is situated at ground level, the Cathedral houses classrooms, academic and administrative offices, libraries, computer labs, a print shop, a food court and even a fully-fledged theatre! It is especially a delight for architect buffs, who will find splendid examples of stained glass, stone, wood and iron work in the Cathedral.

• The Cathedral has been featured in many Hollywood blockbuster movies, including the 2000 movie Wonder Boys and the Richard Gere starrer, The Mothman Prophecies.

The Cathedral of Learning is one of the most unexpected attractions in Pittsburgh. With that being said, it is also one of the most magnificent. The sheer scale and intricacy of the structure is enough to take your breath away.

• The students are quite used to the constant influx of tourists, but take care not to disturb them if you happen to pass through the Common Room!
