Children's Museum Of Pittsburgh - Review

The Children's Museum of Pittsburgh is a children's museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is in the Allegheny Center neighbourhood in Pittsburgh's North side. It is one of the most wonderful places in the city to take your children, as it has a huge number of exciting programs for children in every field imaginable, from dance and rocket building to quilting and robotics. The Children’s Museum is also known for hosting talented visiting artists who offer workshops in a host of media, including pottery, Japanese paper cutting, animation and painting.

The museum was founded in 1983, and is situated in the north side of Pittsburgh. It was expanded in the early 2000s into the defunct planetarium building nearby, which made it the largest Silver LEED certified museum in the country. It is well known for all its exhibits being extremely child friendly and interactive, which makes it a lot of fun for both the kids and the parents as well! It is also known for its famous ‘backyard’, which is open from 11 am to 4:30 pm everyday. It is an outdoor play space which provides lots of interactive pieces by artists and designers that focus on natural elements

  • Don’t forget to check out the newest addition to the museum, named Bounce, a unique, interactive exhibit celebrating the world's most amazing ball.
  • One of the kid’s favourites is Tough Art, an annual exhibition original, interactive artworks “tough” enough to withstand kid handling, including Space Sheep & Prism Palace.
  • At the ‘Garage’, kids can build fantastic vehicles with roller blade wheels and blocks embedded with magnets, and test them on a 37-foot racecourse.

The Children’s Museum in Pittsburgh isn’t just one of the best places in the city to take your little boys and girls. In fact, don’t be surprised if you find yourself exploring your inner child once you’re inside this awe- inspiring museum.

  • What a great place!!! We were visiting from out of state and went with some local family. All the kids (age range 2-14) had a blast. I wish I knew about the awesome water room ahead of time. We would of brought bathing suits and towels. We will definitely go back another time!

  • Definitely a place for toddlers. My daughter is 4, and I really wish we would have known years ago that the Children's museum is mostly for really little ones ( much younger than I would have thought). She would have certainly had more fun then. I recommend this for ages 3 and under. I understand in this age group many children have trouble sharing, and we encountered several children today while there who just grabbed things from my child or pushed her. My child was highly disappointed with this. Parents really need to keep an eye on their little ones, and not leave them unattended so everyone who visits the Children's Museum can have a good time. I really look forward to some of the changes happening for the older Children in 2019.

  • We had such a wonderful experience at the Children’s Museum on Saturday. We brought kids ages 11, 9, 6, and 18 months and they all had a blast. We spent the entire day there - the older kids especially loved the art studio and other art themed areas. The 18 month old really liked the second floor area - lots to do for toddlers and preK kids. The six year old loved everything there and would have spent the whole day in the water play area if we let her. The museum is a great value, in my opinion. I found myself wanting to play with exhibits myself - maybe they should do an adult night ??

  • Always a good time here. Be sure to look at their field trip census online before going, it helps to get a day that is less crowded or to get there right when they open to beat the crowds. The Children's Museum is a great place to encourage your child's creativity and get some of the ya-ya's out, especially on a rainy day. A membership is well worth it as it will get an entire household in for free on every visit and will pay for itself in a couple of visits.

  • Solid option for a long-term membership. There's an entire section for rotating exhibits and the permanent ones have lots of layers kids can discover as they grow. I've been to a few others around the country and Pgh is by far the biggest and best thought out. We've been members for three years and actually let it lapse recently. Within a month we had signed back up. :-) Bonus: you can pair it with the Aviary.
