The USS Requin is a former US Navy submarine, which is now located at the Carnegie Science Centre, Pittsburgh. A Tench-Class submarine, it was the only ship of the Navy to be named after the requin, a sand shark. The Requin used to carry amongst the heaviest armament for a submarine, and it was one of the most decorated vessels of its fleet. After its retirement, it was restored and transferred to the Carnegie Science Centre, where it stands today as a famous museum exhibit.

Today, the USS Requin has quite a different purpose from what it was originally intended, as it helps to educate thousands of visitors about life inside a submarine. It is also one of the last remaining relics of the technology that went into submarine engineering in the forties and fifties, and is a fascinating experience for any tech geeks. The 312 foot hull is a reminder of the USS Requin’s dominance in the great waters, and one can instantly tell that this majestic machine was once an imposing behemoth that patrolled the vast oceans.

  • The USS Requin was a part of the US Navy as early as 1945, and it even took part in the Second World War
  • It was helmed originally by Commander Slade D. Cutter, who was one of the most prolific submarine skippers in the US Navy.

The USS Requin is a wonderful little piece of history, and it provides us with a valuable insight into the lives and hardships of those in the navy. It is a great tribute to the patriots of the nation.

  • If you're into ships, Navy or submarines, this is must go place. She is floating on the river - amazing for a ship that was built in 1945. She is the main attraction, but there is a small exhibition trying to recreate the life of the crew of 81 on a mission. Surely not much space! Take time to put yourself to the shoes of the crew, under water, silent, raking from depth charges. These men were made of iron and their nerves of steel.

  • A very cool historic sub. You get to see the inside of WWII diesel/electric submarine. Learn how 80 men lived out at sea and what jobs they had.

  • Sooooo cool! I can't believe that this was built in 1945 and saw battle; and it's suprisingly not as claustrophobic as I thought it would be

  • This 1940s submarine is truly magnificent! You can feel the claustrophobia the crew once felt inside the submarine, but there is air conditioning inside. Clothes of the crew appear to be left behind. It gives you the eerie feeling of the souls inside the submarine. Also, based on the pictures, the submarine is in excellent condition. There is even a freaking 21.5ft torpedo still positioned at the bow of the submarine! Please check the submarine out! It is included with the general admission tickets! Bon voyage!

  • I would have liked someone there to tell us how all the letters and buttons worked. But overall a cool tour.
