The Quinta Avenida is the tourist centre in Playa del Carmen. This is where all the hotels, shops, bars and restaurants are located and with it, it has become the perfect place to explore the nightlife of the city as well. Mornings at the avenida are calm, relaxed and laid back but evening transform the place into a hub of street performers, music, street food and fun family activities.

The Parque Fundadores on the 5th avenue has a kids’ play area and has Mayan dancers performing every night. You can also find the Papantla dancers putting up a show here through out the day. The Juarez Avenue area is where you can shop for hand-made crafts while the 12th street offers the urban malls and hangout spots.  There is a hidden entrance between the 12th and 14th Street of 5th Avenue where you can see a few Mayan ruins too.  

If shopping for unique things is your weakness, head to the “Pineda Covalin” that sells fine silk prints or simply stop by at El Gallinero Du Chocolat to try some sinful chocolate treats! For food, try “500 Gramos Grill” that’s serves some of the best steaks in the city or relish on the seafood at El Muelle and  LaFisheria.

You can also find Gelato parlours here along with shops that sell ceramic articles, leather goods, embroidered articles and unique gifts. The entire place is perfect if you want to explore the live music scene of the city.
