Plovdiv Roman Theatre also known as the Ancient theatre of Philippopolis is a historical structure in the center of the city of Plovdiv. This magnificent 2nd century amphitheater, built during the reign of Emperor Trajan, has undergone restoration after the landslide in 1972. The theatre is in form of a semi-circle with an outer diameter of 82 meters. The open spectators’ area consists of 28 concentric rows, divided into 2 tiers by an aisle. There are several inscriptions on the structure, which show that the building was used as the seat of the Thracian provincial assembly. The Plovdiv Roman Theatre is now considered to be Bulgaria’s most magical venues, and can be admired for free from several lookouts along UlHemus. Highlights and must sees include:
- The Stage Building
- The Open Spectators area
- The entrance to the orchestra
- 2-Storey porticos – the first in keeping with the Roman Ionic Order and the second with the Roman-Corinthian Order.
- Vaulted passage, under the central bank of seats of the top tier.

Plovdiv Roman Theatre Reviews & Ratings
Just 5Lv, huge theatre, you can explore all other than above 1st floor of the wall behind the stage. Great views down the hill too. Some of the old stone has wonderful wear marking, still lovey detail visible of the original stonemasons handiwork here and there. A great 30-45 min visit?
Must-see landmark, as long as you are in Plovdiv. One of the UNESCO ancient objects of the city in near-perfect condition. Great for dance festivals, opera and theater performances. Might be interesting for the photographers in the evening during and after the sunset, even without entering the landmark. The best photo shooting point is at the right side of the amphitheater.
Amazing views, both during the day and at night, sitting at the top of a hill overlooking the city. It's quite humbling when you look at the scope of the Amphitheatre. If you have the chance to see a concert here or any kind of show I highly recommend it - the acoustics are great. (Just don't forget to bring a spray against mosquitoes because there's a lot of them during the summer evenings!)
I've heard people say that it's just a hill. But it was built around 90ad. For anyone who enjoys history this is worth the walk up the hill! Beautiful area surrounded by trendy bars with outdoor seating. Wonderful place.
Beautiful Roman theatre. Dramatic views. Some renovations but mainly original structure. Views across Plovdiv spectacular. The theatre seating ramp is very steep and some of the original marble steps are slippery from wear. No wheelchair or pushchair access. No guidebooks on site (Plovdiv you're missing a trick here, visitors would like guidebooks giving history and photos in their own languages - and will buy them!). Elevated sections are accessible but there are no railings so not really suitable for young children. Small bar/cafe outside gates, did not check to see if there were toilets.
