This is the very spot which is believed to be the starting point for the Pilgrim Fathers on their journey to North America in 1620. Flanked by British and American flags, these steps mark the beginning of the voyage of 102 passengers who set sail on the Mayflower to Northern America. Remains of the cobbled grade II pier can still be seen.

The steps were rebuilt over the period of time but the surrounding plagues give an insight into the other key events that took place on the site like the embarking of first emigrant ships to New Zealand, Captain Cook's voyages of discovery, the arrival of the first transatlantic flight in 1916 and the first solo circumnavigation of the globe by boat.

Climb up the steps, head over to the mini-balcony offering view of the sea and be lost in the history that changed the demographics of the world!
