After French missionary Pere Laval arrived in Mauritius in 1841, he fought long and hard for the plight of the poor and sick. For the brief time that he was in Port Louis, Pere Laval became quite a respected figure all over the country. When he died in 1846, he was buried in the graveyard of the old church. In 1979, the grave was beautified and today people from all religions come and pay their respects to his shrine. Attributed with miraculous powers, the tombstone of the late missionary has been rubbed smooth as many pilgrims come and rub their hands across it. In the same premises, there’s a small museum with Pere Laval’s robes and a few other personal belongings.
