At 1073 feet above sea level this park was originally known as Talbert's Mountain. According to local Legend the name the park has today comes from a time when Native Americans would build signal fires here to relay messages from the council meetings just help. It is thought to be the highest spot in the city. As such it's very popular with hikers and drivers who want to reach the top to take in panoramic views of the city. Check out the 1949 sculpture of the mother holding her child by Frederick Littman. No you can drive up to the top, it is easy to just hike as the elevation gain is only 820 feet. The trailhead starts out atMarquam Nature Park shelter. On a clear day you can see as far as Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, Mount Adams, Mount Hood, and Mount Jefferson.

  • Motor Vehicles can be at the park from 8:00am onwards only. From April to October the park is closed to Motor Vehicles at 9:00pm. From November to March it is close to Motor Vehicles at 7:00pm.
  • The park may also be closed in times of bad weather.
