I can't say enough good things about this place. I'm half-Polish, so the vodka and food is very similar to my background. The food is unbelievable. They take rustic foods and keep them rustic, but make them fresh and perfect. Herring in a fur coat is to die for. For me though, the meat dumplings in the garlic butter broth is one of the best food items in Portland. Also be brave and try their infused vodkas. They are incredibly knowledgeable about them too, so don't hesitate to ask. This place usually has a wait, so make sure to plan for a long, awesome evening.
Kachka is a wonderful place to experience authentic Slavic food. The food tastes just like it came from my home kitchen. The simple food is presented in a professional and gourmet manner that is not only pleasant to look at but is delicious to indulge. The atmosphere is straight out of USSR times, complete with the red and gold themes, the Soviet posters, and the selection of music that ranges from Shanson to Russian Folk music. P. S. If you happen to have to wait in line to get a table, the food will be TOTALLY worth it.
Outstanding food, reasonably priced. Good service. The server helped me pick items from a menu that I wasn't familiar with. I had Baltic Sprat and dumplings (Pelmeni). Both were absolutely delicious. For dessert I had Berries and Smetana - exquisite.
Unfortunately, the staff was cold and rude. They made us sit at the bar because there were I guess lots of reservations, but there were about 20 open tables that we could have used. We were 4 people sitting at the bar. Then, when I slid a dirty dish over to the bartender, he immediately got really pissed off and SLAMMED a drink he was making down on the counter and shook his head as if I had committed some kind of crime. Maybe I committed some kind of faux pas by trying to clear the space myself but he was so rude it was unbelievable. He made all of us so uncomfortable! Then, they confused our order and brought out 2 plates instead of 4. Overall I think there was 1 competent and nice person serving us, the rest were pretty much nasty. Will never go back there or take anyone there again. Sorry but if you want to be treated nice, do not go here.
Great customer service, fast and welcoming. However food here is unfortunately not the best. Dumplings are no where near even store quality in Russia, shashlik is under cooked, was even slightly cold when served. This place is definitely over hyped. If you want to try Russian food, go to a Russian store.
