Great place to learn about coffee and Stumptown Coffee Roasters. No actual coffee drinks besides their packaged stuff sold here, but they do sell their coffee beans and other coffee accessories. They also do free coffee cuppings as an educational tool to the public Monday thru Friday from 3-4pm.
WARNING: This isn't a "coffee shop" so don't show up here looking for your next cappuccino. What you will find here is information on an incredible coffee roaster, the ability to sample the roasts they offer and coffee drinks like their cold brew and the totally cool holiday blend. You can also purchase any of their beans currently in stock, all freshly roasted. They have tours and brewing classes every other week, I wasn't able to attend (came on an odd weekend) but every day they are open they have a cupping at 3pm. The cupping is something I recommend any coffee lover try out. It's not something folks generally get to do and I highly recommend it. They bring out five different types of coffee, walk you through the whole cupping process, and have you taste them blind (without knowing what they are). Then they find out what people like, why, and reveal what they really are. I found it educational, entertaining, and tasty.
Free public coffee tasting at 3PM every day with beans for sale after. It takes about an hour and is a fun way to get introduced to the nuances of artisan coffee. Recommended!
This specific Stumptown location provides a different coffee experience – they stock beans, equipment, and merchandise. Primarily, people are here for the tasting bar to sample different beans. I was here for the coffee cupping, which happens daily at 3pm - it was a great experience! The host/barista was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. We were guided through the standardized process of coffee cupping – smelling, breaking the crust, and tasting five different types of coffee from different parts of the world. This process really helped me find the specific flavors I like in a coffee. Lots of great information about direct trade coffee, sustainable practices, and compensation for coffee farmers. The whole process was about an hour. There was absolutely no pressure to buy beans at the end of it, but some of their varieties are absolutely delicious. Well worth the visit!
We're spoiled here in Portland because almost every cafe is good, you can walking into a random store-front and expect a decent espresso or drip coffee on almost every corner. I like this Stumptown because it give something different, you can do free coffee tastings and really learn the ins-and-outs of coffee flavour, you can come for barista training classes, or maybe stop in for a latte art class. It's a great place with a chill vibe, and trust me none of us will judge you if you're new to coffee we just wanna share the passion for our caffeinated addiction.
