The Soares dos Reis National Museum is a picture of elegance and tremendous beauty – inside and out. The museum was founded in 1911 and happens to be Portugal’s first art museum. It is housed in the lavish Carrancas Palace and named after famous Portuguese sculptor Soares dos Reis. 

• The ‘Estado Novo’ (New State) of Portugal placed tremendous importance in preservation of the country’s culture and history. In this regard, the National Museum came to represent the collective consciousness of the entire nation, giving it a sense of solidarity.
• The museum conducts many educational programmes for the local population as well as hosts a number of exhibitions on a regular basis. It is believed to be part of an endeavour to cultivate a bond with the masses.
• Apart from celebrated paintings and sculptures from the past 4 decades, the museum also has ceramic works, jewellery, glasswork, fabrics and furniture on display.
• The most famous work on display at the National Museum is called ‘O Desterrado’ (The Exiled), a piece by sculptor Soares dos Reis.

The ground floor reception is a one stop destination for all your queries. The museum gift shop has brilliant little replicas of the artefacts on display and many other amusing souvenirs.

• Photography is not allowed inside the museum. 

• Children, senior citizens and Porto Card holders receive discounts on the ticket price.
• On Sunday, admission into the museum is free till 2:00 pm.
