Groenkloof Nature Reserve - Review

What the reserve doesn’t offer in terms of novelties, it more than makes up for in terms of experience. Set near the Fountain Valley, the reserve offers visitors their own method of travel. You can clamber atop a horse, hike, and roll around on a mountain bike or just lounge through in a 4X4. The animals to watch out for include impala, kudu, wildebeest, ostrich, giraffe, red hartebeest and sable. And that’s not even starting on what an incredible paradise this is for bird lovers. You can even camp overnight. There are activities for all ages and fitness levels, so no one is going to get shortchanged on their preferred level of fun. Deep in the reserve, you will come on the famous Mayo Restaurant. No matter what else you do, make sure to have a meal there. The management is excellent; their tips and advice is intuitive of every visitors needs.

  • Very very nice for short medium and large day walks close to home. Excellent mountain biking unless you get robbed of your bike by the local wildlife so I've heard. But that hardly ever happens just like the petrol price going down

  • Loved this hiking trail. Each trail is clearly marked and easy to follow. Its a good idea to check the map, so you know the distance you will cover.

  • Beautiful place. Make sure to go in a group. Lovely interaction with giraffes when I was there. Definitely worth visiting if you enjoy hiking or mountain biking.

  • Went there with our family for a 8,5 km hike and saw 2 zebras under some trees at a distance of a few meters. Suddenly two giraffe came up from behind some other trees and watched us cautiously. Made for some great experience and videos to show. We also saw springboks but they were scared and kept distance. Many trails and footprints for kids to show and teach. I really liked the experience off being on foot and trying to spot the animals while enjoying the scenery. Unfortunately you hear the cars from the motorways around, so no tranquility there. A guide or someone who knows the trails already is a plus, if you have someone.

  • It is really a great place to spend your leisure time in Pretoria. We went there to have a city view and just a few meters away stood three zebras. It's nice that you can go there by car but in respect for the nature you should take the bus or come with your bike. It's also a great place for mountainbikers!
