When they advertise pictures of Vallarta on tourist brochures, showing off its charming appeal and the architecture known as 'Vallarta Style', you're probably looking at pictures of the Gringo Gulch. 'Gringo' is what Mexicans call American or Canadian immigrants living and working in Mexico. In the 1950s and 60s most foreign North Americans would set up house in this neighbourhood, falling in love with its twisting cobblestoned streets, cute bridges and unexpectedly colorful corners. Though there's nothing special to see here, it's one of the nicest spots in the city to just walk around in. Ask the locals if they can point you towards Casa Kimberly, the house that Richard Burton bought for his lady love Elizabeth Taylor.
