Founded in 1955, the historical museum of Istria is housed in a baroque style castle. Located atop a hill in Pula, this fortification offers a 360 degree view of the city and the city wall and towers can be observed. The fortress was built in the 17th century.

The museum displays around 50,000 items of immense cultural and historical value from the time period of 15th century till date. The museum mainly focuses on history of the city Pula, the medieval and the modern age history of Istria.

Hand drawn maps, decorations, medals, plaques, certificates, awards, and emblems and various other objects from the fields of pharmacy, education and the activities of individual companies attributed to everyday urban life in Pula and Istria between the 18th and 20th centuries can be observed here. There are also collectibles about maritime and shipbuilding traditions.

Around 5000 photographs, postcards, film and video recordings are a treat to history lovers who visit the museum.

In the huge courtyard, there is also the only preserved boat of the Top-TOPO type which was a typical vessel in the Adriatic Sea dating back to early 20th century.
