Laxmi Street might just be the busiest road in Pune. Laxmi road is named after the Hindu goddess of wealth and it fits it very well. From traditional small shop owners to huge international brands, this area has an array of options open for a shopper.
Countless narrow streets of the traditional Maharashtrian area of Sadashiv Peth crisscross across the dazzling Laxmi road. It starts from the Alka Talkies, runs through these old peths and ends in the cantonment board area.
Almost the entire road is covered with shops and eateries on both sides. It also holds a lot of publishing houses. The mesmerizing must-visit traditional brands like P.N. Gadgil jewelers, Chitale Bandhu Mithaiwale, Waman Hari Pethe also find a home here.
Laxmi Road is a major attraction during Diwali and Ganeshostav. As the road of shopkeepers, Laxmi Puja is one of the main festivals on it. Shops are decorated with garlands and crackers lighten up the sky. All the Ganesh idols are carried to the rivers through this road on Anant Chaturdashi.
The entire road is blocked and people from all over the city gather to witness the huge procession. Traditional Dhol bands, who have prepared for many months before for this day, pour all their heart out in the festivities.
Dancing with these bands on the loud, rhythmic beats of the Dhols is a heavenly experience. The locals will not call you a Punekar until you experience this huge Ganapati procession.
Handcrafted gift items, silk saris, traditional jewelry of the Maharashtrian style is the main tourist attractions in Pune. Clothes, jewelry, cosmetics, utensils, accessories and whatnot, this road is the right place for shopaholics.
