Skippers Canyon - Review

Undoubtedly a sight that must not be missed, the Skippers Canyon, not only comes with a lot of history but also 22 km of unadulterated scenic beauty. Accessible only by the Skippers Road, a ride on the road is more than enough to give you a sneak-peek into what the trip ahead holds in store. The Shotover River runs through the Canyon, making it a popular spot for jet boating/skiing, bungy jumping, caving, etc. However, there aren’t any self-drive options available to visit Skippers Canyon; there are companies that conduct the tour of a daily basis complete with 4WD minibuses.

Regarded as New Zealand’s best kept secret, the highlight of the trip will be crossing the Skippers Bridge suspended 90m from the river, with all of its 14 original wires still intact. Apart from the drive along Skippers Road, there are a lot of other activities that will reveal the mystery of Skippers Canyon!

Skippers Canyon, Queenstown Reviews

  • It was a great experience at Skippers Canyon Jet for us. Our driver guide Willie was very funny and humerus. On the way down and up Willie stopped vehicle at various Lookout points and explained significance of all of them. We thoroughly enjoyed our drive and Jet boat ride in Skippers Canyon. It's worth going up there.

  • Went on this tour not knowing what to expect and gosh was it worth it! The Skippers road is an adventure in itself. Dave was funny and knowledgeable! The jet boat ride is amazing and it is a family run business for 5 generations! So much history about the gold mining and how Queenstown came to be. Genuine and worth a visit :)

  • Good value, fun drive down skippers road. Dave was a good guide!

  • My wife, son and I recently did the trip down the hairy road with bus driver Willy who was able to keep us laughing and make the drive really funny. Then the jet boat ride was fantastic and the photo pack with flash drive along with some large prints was very good value. All in all we would highly recommend this experience.

  • Not worth it. Definitely not for their price. If you are in to extreme go kayaking or rafting, and if you want to spend time you are better off going to the museum or garden in the city. The ride is boring unless you are the driver as short. If it takes 30 minutes it's because you wait for other boats to pass and the driver was really slow. the "big deal 360 spins" are not really big deals and the movie they show you is not like the actual ride. Would not do again Do not recommend.
