Undoubtedly a sight that must not be missed, the Skippers Canyon, not only comes with a lot of history but also 22 km of unadulterated scenic beauty. Accessible only by the Skippers Road, a ride on the road is more than enough to give you a sneak-peek into what the trip ahead holds in store. The Shotover River runs through the Canyon, making it a popular spot for jet boating/skiing, bungy jumping, caving, etc. However, there aren’t any self-drive options available to visit Skippers Canyon; there are companies that conduct the tour of a daily basis complete with 4WD minibuses.

Regarded as New Zealand’s best kept secret, the highlight of the trip will be crossing the Skippers Bridge suspended 90m from the river, with all of its 14 original wires still intact. Apart from the drive along Skippers Road, there are a lot of other activities that will reveal the mystery of Skippers Canyon!

  • Skippers Jet canyon was grouse. The jet boat was fun and got really close to the cliff edges. Dave was a brilliant and knowledgeable tour guide for the drive down to the canyon. Would recommend and do again 👌

  • Shocking experience with this company. My partner and I booked in to do the Skippers Canyon Jet with a travel agent in Queenstown for our last day, so we wanted to get on the first trip of the day. Our travel agent called their company to double check what time they would be departing from town and the person he spoke to had told him they would be picking us up outside a building called The Station at 8:30am. We arrived outside The Station the next morning at 8:18am and waited for our transport to arrive but no one showed up. It got to 8:37am and I asked a few other people waiting at the same spot, if they had seen the Skippers Canyon bus but they informed us they had been waiting since 7:55am and no bus had shown up. I then called Skippers Canyon Jet and the woman I spoke to put the phone down while she called the bus driver. Unfortunately for the bus driver, he was on speaker phone and I heard him say to the woman "they can find their own transport there, it's only 25 minutes away" which I thought was absolutely appalling and incredibly rude seeing as we had paid $318 for this experience. Meanwhile at around 8:40am, my partner spotted the Skippers Canyon Jet bus drive past us and turn down a street and disappear. We were told that the bus driver would call out a roll upon arrival to ensure all guests were there, but I find it confusing that if they supposedly called out a roll and we weren't present that they would give us a call to see where we were. I was given a pathetic apology and nothing was done by the company to rectify the situation. This was incredibly upsetting for us as we had planned our day specifically around this due to the fact that we were flying home the same day. I find it shocking that this company don't value their customers, especially when we had invested $318 into the experience. I would never recommend this to anyone.

  • Exceptional driving and educational drive by Dave, he made the whole experience enjoyable, explaining every single point of interest while navigating the most treacherous piece of road I've ever seen (including some great kiwi humour) , Lincoln the boat driver was a hell of a lot of fun and talented. Thanks guys for an amazing journey!

  • The best jetboats in Queenstown hands down. For like $10 more than the other jetboat companies, they take you on an extremely scenic (& sketchy) dirt road down to the beautiful Skipper's canyon which takes about an hour. The boat ride itself is so beautiful, it feels like Disney World except you're doing 360s at high speeds

  • Fantastic experience, includes a drive up the famous Skippers Canyon Rd. Driver Robbie was great. Better than the rest, in my opinion.
