Skyline Gondola - Review
For the best view of Queenstown, climb aboard the Skyline Gondola that will take you to the top of Bob’s Peak for a breath-taking panorama of the adventure capital of the world. Not only is the view from the destination picturesque, the journey to Bob’s Peak too is a real treat. Coronet’s Peak, The Remarkables and the Queenstown Gardens to name a few, are just some of Queenstown’s attractions that you’ll be able to spot.
One of the most popular activities here, apart from the dining atop the peak is the Luge Ride. From Bob’s Peak, hop on for a free airlift (by chair) about 100 m high for an 800 m Luge Ride down. The Luge cart is safe for all ages and you can enjoy a scenic view on the ride down and catch the airlift back to the starting line for another ride. There’s also a cultural Maori Kiwi Haka dance that takes place on the hill, the tickets for which can be purchased at the entrance.

Skyline Gondola, Queenstown Reviews
Skyline Queenstown is great - the luge at the top is very good fun for the kids - just check what's the minimum age. The bike racks are absolutely awesome just a shame that it is not possible to use the gondola during the peak season. The trails are still open but going up the mountain road is pretty tiring - hard to do more than 4-5 in a row.
Beautiful view of Lake Wakatipu and snow capped mountains beyond. Hands down the steepest gondola I've been on (which aren't many to be fair). Great range of food, catering for a variety of tastes. Some hits (salads, meats, some fish), some misses (prawns and mussels). Dessert bar - great!
Far the very basic reason to come: to watch the sunset over Queenstown. The views are beautiful. I went close to sunset time and enjoyed browsing through the gift shop, admiring the jellybean art, and trying the meat mince pie that was at a reduced price. It was delicious!
We buy an Annual Pass if we are in Queenstown on holiday as it gets us unlimited rides on the gondola plus discounted food, beverages and luge rides. That's all really good! We had decided to head up the gondola on the last night of our holiday for a "farewell drink" at the bar, overlooking the township. We were not impressed to get off the gondola only to find out that the Stratosphere and the bar were booked out for a private function. There was nothing on the info board at the lower terminal to warn us of this. The screen at the upper terminal said the bar was open; no mention of a private function. There was not even a notice on the door to the bar/restaurant to indicate what was going on. Another couple were caught out with the same issue, and were equally unhappy. I don't have an issue with private bookings, but I do have an issue with the communication of this to other customers, especially when there were so many opportunities to warn us. On a much brighter note, we returned the following morning for a final luge ride before we left town and were given FANTASTIC service by the luge staff, particularly those at the upper terminal.
Definitely not worth the $40.00 per person. On the return journey we had to share our gondola with two staff members, who talked loudly and didn't engage with us, paying customers. Would have much rather been asked if we minded sharing, especially as we had paid a premium to enjoy the service.
