Built in the 13th century, the Citadel of The Guard was used as a defence fortification for the Transylvanian villages. The structure was strategically constructed on the route of the armies trying to invade the region and since the people from Rasnov had to stay here for decades, they started settling around the fortification- giving the place its name.

Throughout its history, the citadel has been part of many wars and sieges. In 14th century, the Rasnov and Brasov citadel were the only remaining fortification that survived the intrusion of the Tatar. In the early 15th century, the first siege of an Ottoman army took place right here and during the 17th century, Michael the Brave along with his wife and loyal troops, came here after their defeat.

The citadel has also survived a fire in the 18th century and an earthquake in the 19th century. The last historic fight at the place was during the 19th century when the Hungarian revolutionaries and the Austrian imperial troops made the locals retreat to the fortification.

To add to the many stories of the place, there is a well on the citadel grounds that is believed to have a treasure that is 300 years old but what truly makes the place priceless, is its architecture, stories and the fact that it has witnessed nearly 700 years of the region’s history! You can still see the remains of a school, a chapel and nearly 30 homes that were built here by the Rasnov people.
