The Black Hill Caverns were discovered in 1882 by curious gold seekers but the actual credit of the discovery actually goes out to the Lakota Indians who were well versed in the power of the calcite crystals centuries before the gold seekers discovery. The inside of the cave is astonishingly beautiful like a glittering path to the underworld with the rocks in various animal formations. Apart from animal shapes, the cavern has a huge variety of other very intriguing and interesting shapes that keep you glued to the cave walls for more. It open from 15th May through 30th Sep. It has two types of tours -

  • The Adventure Tour
  • The Crystal Tour

  • Our guide Dylan H was great! Very informative, took his time explaining about and showing different areas. Kept a nice pace for everyone. Cave itself is awesome! Be sure to wear comfy non slip shoes and definitely take a light jacket. Especially for the little ones.

  • Good choice for a cavern tour. You get to travel 225ft into the mountain and explore some pretty cool caves. We wished there were a few more cool looking crystals, but it was still a great tour. Also, you can't beat the cool 47-52 degree temperature in the caves when it's 85 degrees or hotter outside!

  • We're local, but sometimes we like to play tourist. This is a great adventure place with or without kids! (Kids under 6 are free!!!) We took the 1 hour tour and kept up. The kids loved the crystal dig afterwards!

  • The cave was very beautiful. My kids are 9 and 3, and they enjoyed it very much. Some hard spots to maneuver in the cave, but that should be expected. Kaylee was our tour guide, and she was very personable. Will go again!

  • If you can walk the adventure tour, I highly suggest it. The tour guide did a great job educating the group and keeping us all together. Plus he gave us tips on certain areas that are more slick or lower which we could run into. I would recommend a good pair of walking shoes and a jacket!
