One of the most important landmarks of Reims, Sube fountain dazzles one’s eyes with its golden statue called: “The Glory”. It is situated in the centre of Drouet d’Erlon’s square, one of the busiest squares in the city. The fountain is crowned by the statue of the winged Angel, signifying a collusion of art, myth and beauty. The area was completely destroyed by the bombings of World War II. The fountain takes its name from Saint Auguste Sube, who brought 200,000 francs of gold for its construction. Inaugurated in 1906, the fountain is the craft of the sculptors Paul Gasq, Paul Auban and Louis Baralis, the set designer Charles Wary and the architect Andre Najoux. On the Sube pedestral, you can read the names of four local rivers engraved: La Squippe, La Marne, La Vesle and L’Aisne, which flow like each from a conch. The Fountain has over the years come to symbolise the cultural embodiment of the city.
